The Seagull

John Neumeier
A remote estate in the Russian provinces becomes the setting for longing, disappointment and personal conflict. Several generations come together here, each with their own dreams and ambitions. The seagull, free and unattached, becomes a symbol of what everyone strives for – artistic fulfillment, love, freedom – and at the same time of their fragility.

While Anton Chekhov's world-renowned play is about theater and literature in Tsarist Russia at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, John Neumeier's The Seagull is about ballet, dance, and choreography of the same era. The young Kostya thus becomes the restless creator of a fictional avant-garde dance, his mother, the prima ballerina Irina Arkadina, the representative of traditional classical ballet, her lover Boris Trigorin the established dancer-choreographer, and Nina a hopeful young dancer in search of herself.

The focus is on the tension between art and love, between aspiration and reality. Neumeier makes visible what is often only hinted at in Chekhov's drama – and what makes this story so timeless: the subtle nuances of power, dependence and desire that manifest themselves in every generation.
