Young Choreographers
An evening created entirely by the ensemble members of the Hamburg Ballet. Around 20 dancers take on the roles of choreographers, set, costume, and lighting designers, developing their own small creations for and with their colleagues. Once again this year, the creative output is so extensive that two different programs are planned: Program I on the first performance day and Program II on the second performance day.

The Young Choreographers have become a firmly established institution at the Hamburg Ballet. The dancers of the ensemble develop their own works and take on the entire artistic process: from the choreography itself and the selection of music to lighting and costume design, stage sets, projections, and the props used on stage. Varied and entertaining, the program offers a glimpse into the future of dance. For the young choreographers, the stage serves as a platform to experiment with different movement languages and to develop new artistic concepts. Musically, too, they draw from a rich spectrum: from classical music to pop, electronic to heavy metal, jazz, and film soundtracks—there is something to suit every taste.
The Young Choreographers project was established in Hamburg in 1974 by John Neumeier and has been continued ever since. It offers members of the company the opportunity to change roles and try their hand as choreographers. In doing so, Hamburg Ballet presents dancers with a possible professional perspective for the time after their active performing careers, while at the same time fostering their artistic development. A look at recent years demonstrates the project’s success: current and former ensemble members such as Kristina Paulin, Yuka Oishi, Aleix Martínez, and Edvin Revazov are now working as choreographers, either full-time or alongside other professional activities.
